Spain: Economic growth steady in Q4 2016

The Spanish economy recorded another strong expansion in the fourth quarter to round off a year of remarkable growth. GDP expanded at a seasonally-adjusted 0.7% in Q4 from the previous quarter, according to preliminary data released by the National Statistics Office (INE) on 30 January. The expansion matched both FocusEconomics panelists’ expectations and the increase logged in the third quarter.

On an annual basis, GDP expanded 3.0% in the fourth quarter, which was slightly below the 3.2% increase observed in the previous quarter and the lowest reading in seven quarters. The National Statistics Office will release more detailed data on 2 March.

The Central Bank expects the economy to grow 2.5% in 2017 and 2.1% in 2018. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that GDP will expand 2.4% this year, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. In 2018, panelists expect the economy to expand 2.1%.
