South Africa: Manufacturing output contracts in June

August 10, 2017

In June, manufacturing output dropped 2.3% compared to the same month last year. The result marked a further decline following the 0.9% drop reported in May. June’s decline was the result of decreased output of petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products.

On a month-on-month basis, manufacturing production came in flat in June as opposed to the seasonally-adjusted 0.3% drop recorded in May.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecasts panelists expect manufacturing to decline 0.7% in 2017, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2018, the panel expects manufacturing to expand 1.0%.
