South Africa: Manufacturing expands in September

November 10, 2015

In September, manufacturing production increased 0.9% over the same month last year, which contrasted the 0.3% fall seen in the previous month. September’s decrease was mainly driven by expanding output in textiles, clothing, leather and footwear.

On a monthly basis, manufacturing output rose 2.2% in seasonally-adjusted terms, which was an improvement over the 0.6% increase observed in August and marked the highest rise in a year. However, annual average growth in industrial production decreased from a 0.8% increase in August to a 0.3% rise in September, which marked the lowest reading in three months.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecasts panelists expect manufacturing to contract 0.4% in 2015, which is up 0.4 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel expects manufacturing to expand 2.9%, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate.
