Slovakia: Inflation stabilizes in August

In August, consumer prices fell 0.2% over the previous month, matching the result tallied in July and thereby remaining at the lowest level since February. August’s reading mainly reflected lower prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages, transport, as well as for clothing and footwear.

Inflation in August was unchanged at July’s 0.1%. Meanwhile, the harmonized index of consumer prices fell 0.2% in monthly terms in August (July: -0.3% month-on-month). Annual harmonized consumer prices fell 0.2% in August, which was in line with July’s drop.

The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) expects harmonized consumer prices to fall 0.1% on average in 2015, before rebounding to a 1.6% increase in 2016. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect HICP inflation to be 0.1% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel expects HICP inflation to increase to 1.4%.
