Slovakia: Drop in consumer prices stabilizes in June

July 15, 2016

In June, consumer prices increased 0.1% over the previous month, which was above the flat reading tallied in May. June’s figure was mainly caused by higher prices for transport as well as for clothing and footwear.

Consumer prices fell 0.8% annually in June. The print matched the result tallied in May, thereby remaining at historically low levels. Meanwhile, the harmonized index of consumer prices rose 0.1% in monthly terms in June (May: -0.1% month-on-month). Annual harmonized consumer prices fell 0.7% in June, which was in line with May’s result.

The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) expects harmonized consumer prices to fall 0.3% in 2016 and to increase 1.2% in 2017. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect harmonized consumer prices to decline 0.1% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects HICP inflation to be 1.5%.
