Slovakia: Drop in consumer prices eases in April

In April, consumer prices rose 0.3% over the previous month, following the flat reading tallied in March. April’s figure, which hit an 11-month high, mainly reflected higher prices clothing and footwear, transport as well as for alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

Consumer prices fell 0.4% annually in April. The print was above the 0.5% decline in March. Meanwhile, the harmonized index of consumer prices rose 0.4% in monthly terms in April (March: 0.0% month-on-month). Annual harmonized consumer prices fell 0.4% in April, which was above March’s 0.5% decline.

The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) expects harmonized inflation to be 0.4% on average in 2016, before accelerating to 1.8% in 2017. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect harmonized inflation to be 0.1% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects HICP inflation to rise to 1.6%.
