Slovakia: Consumer prices post another flat reading in August

In August, the consumer price index fell 0.2% over the previous month, which came in further below July’s 0.1% drop and markeding a one-year low. Prices in 5 of the 12 categories that make up the index fell in August. The reading mainly reflects decreasing prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages as well as clothing and footwear.

Consumer prices recorded a flat reading over the same month last year in August, matching July’s result. Meanwhile, the harmonized index of consumer prices inched remained at July’s 0.2% drop in August. Annual average HICP inflation decreased from 0.3% in July to 0.1% in August, the lowest rate on record.

The Central Bank expects HICP inflation to average 0.1% in 2014 and 1.6% in 2015. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect HICP inflation to average 0.2% this year, which is down 0.1 percentage points compared to last month’s forecast. In 2015, the panel expects HICP inflation to increase to 1.5%.
