Slovakia: Consumer prices moderate in April to flat reading

May 19, 2014

In April, the consumer price index registered a flat reading over the previous month, matching March's result. Prices in half of the categories that make up the index rose in April. The largest increases were registered in prices for clothing and footwear as well as recreation and culture. The steepest declines were seen in prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco as well as in furnishings and household equipment.

Consumer prices recorded a flat reading over the same month last year in April, which was below the 0.2% increase tallied in March and marked the lowest value since December 2009. Meanwhile, annual HICP prices—based on the harmonized index of consumer prices—were stable at March’s minus 0.2%, which had marked the lowest rate on record. Annual average HICP inflation edged down from 0.9% in March to 0.7% in April, the lowest rate since December 2010.

The Central Bank expects HICP inflation to average 0.2% in 2014 and 1.9% in 2015. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect HICP inflation to average 0.6% this year, which is down 0.2 percentage points compared to last month’s forecast. In 2015, the panel expects HICP inflation to increase to 1.8%.
