Slovakia: Industrial production growth eases in February to seven-month low

April 11, 2017

In February, industrial production grew 2.6% from the same month of the previous year, which marked a deceleration from January’s strong 7.5% expansion and the worst result since July 2016. According to the Statistical Institute, February’s growth was broad-based as it reflected increases in all three major categories. The mining and quarrying category grew at the fastest pace, followed by electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning, while manufacturing came last.

On a monthly basis, industrial production decreased 0.9% in seasonally-adjusted terms in February. The print contrasted January’s 0.6% growth. As a result, annual average growth in industrial production fell from 5.2% in January to 4.6% in February, the lowest figure since August 2015.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to increase 4.0% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, the panel sees industrial growth accelerating to 4.9%.
