Romania: Inflation steady at January's record low in February

March 11, 2015

In February, consumer prices rose 0.33% over the previous month, which came in below the 0.43% increase observed in January. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INSSE), February’s result reflected higher prices for all the subcomponents that comprise the index, except for the services category, for which prices were lower compared to the previous month.

Annual headline inflation remained unchanged at January’s 0.4% and was in line with market expectations. January’s result had marked an all-time low. Inflation is still well below the Central Bank’s tolerance margin of plus/minus 1.0% around its target of 2.5%. Annual average inflation stabilized at January’s 1.0%, which also marked a multi-year low.

The Central Bank foresees inflation of 2.2% in 2015. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see inflation at 2.0% at the end of 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists forecast inflation of 2.9%.
