Romania: Inflation reaches new historic low in February

March 12, 2012

In February, consumer prices rose 0.64% over the previous month, which nearly doubled the 0.36% rise recorded in January. The increase was the result of higher prices for food items, on the back of harsh weather conditions. Annual headline inflation, however, fell from 2.7% in January to 2.6% in February, and marked yet another post-communist era record low. The reading, however, fell short from market expectations that had inflation dropping further to 2.4%. Annual average inflation also dropped from 5.5% in January to 5.1% in February. The Central Bank expects inflation to end the year at 3.2% and to moderate to 3.0% in 2013.
