Romania: Inflation gains ground in March

April 10, 2015

In March, consumer prices rose 0.41% over the previous month, which came in slightly above the 0.33% increase observed in February. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INSSE), March’s result reflected higher prices for all the subcomponents that comprise the index. The non-food products category registered the highest price increase.

Annual headline inflation increased from 0.4% in February to 0.8% in March. February’s result had marked an all-time low. Inflation is still well below the Central Bank’s tolerance margin of plus/minus 1.0% around its target of 2.5%. Annual average inflation inched down from February’s 1.0% to 0.9% in March, marking a multi-year low.

Consensus Forecast panelists see inflation at 1.6% at the end of 2015, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists forecast inflation of 2.2%.
