Romania: Inflation defies market expectations
November 12, 2012
In October, consumer prices added 0.29% over the previous month, which was well below both the steep 1.18% increase recorded in September and market expectations of a 0.70% rise. The increase was the result of higher prices for services, whereas prices for food items remained virtually unchanged. Annual headline inflation eased from 5.3% in September to 5.0% in October, but remained above the Central Bank's tolerance margin of 3.0% plus/minus 1.0%. The reading defied market expectations which had inflation remaining stable at 5.3% and marked the first moderation in five months. Annual average inflation, however, inched up from 3.0% in September to 3.1% in October.
