Romania: Industrial production expands robustly in December

Industrial output rose 4.0% in December over the same month of the previous year, marking the largest expansion in four months and a a jump over November’s 2.4% rise. According to the National Institute of Statistics, the pickup mainly reflected an acceleration in manufacturing growth. Conversely, mining and quarrying as well as electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply fell deeper into contraction.

On a month-on-month basis, industrial production fell 0.30% in December, which followed the 0.08% decrease tallied in the previous month. Annual average growth in industrial production inched up from 2.7% in November to 2.8% in December.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 4.3% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. The panel estimates that industrial output will increase 4.6% in 2017.
