Romania: Growth in industrial production accelerates in April

June 13, 2016

Industrial output rose a solid 3.4% in April over the same month last year, coming in above the revised 2.6% expansion tallied in March (April: +0.2% year-on-year). According to the National Institute of Statistics, the reading reflected an expansion in manufacturing and the electricity, gas, and steam components, which more than offset a sharp contraction in mining and quarrying.

On a month-on-month basis, industrial production rose from March’s revised 0.8% expansion (previously reported: +2.9% year-on-year) to a solid 3.5% rise in April, marking the highest reading in over three years. Despite the impressive reading, annual average growth in industrial production inched up from 2.1% to 2.2%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 2.9% in 2016, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel estimates that industrial output will increase 4.4% in 2017.
