Romania: Economy slows further in Q2

According to a preliminary estimate released by the statistical office on 14 August, in the second quarter the economy grew 1.2% over the same period last year. The figure marked the slowest expansion since Q4 2012 and was a deterioration compared to the 3.9% increase recorded in the previous quarter. More detailed data will be released on 3 September.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP in Q2 fell 1.0% in seasonally-adjusted terms, which contrasted the 0.2% expansion recorded in the first quarter. The figure marked the fastest contraction since Q1 2010.

The government expects GDP to expand 3.0% in 2014. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 2.8% in 2014, which is unchanged over the previous month’s projection. For 2015, the panel expects the economy to expand 3.2%.
