Romania: Economy slows down in Q1

According to a preliminary estimate released by the statistical office on 15 May, the economy grew 3.8% over the same period last year in the first quarter. The figure marked the slowest expansion since Q2 2013 and was a deterioration compared to the 5.4% increase recorded in the previous quarter. More detailed data will be released on 4 June.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP rose a timid 0.1% in seasonally-adjusted terms in Q1, which was well below the 1.6% expansion recorded in the fourth quarter. The figure marked the slowest expansion in six quarters.

The government expects GDP to expand 3.0% in 2014. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 2.8% in 2014, which is unchanged over the previous month’s projection. For 2015, the panel expects the economy to expand 3.2%.
