Romania: Economy recovers in the third quarter

According to a preliminary estimate released by the statistical office on 14 November, the economy grew 3.2% over the same period last year in the third quarter. The figure marked an acceleration over the 1.2% expansion observed in the previous quarter and overshot market expectations of a lesser increase of 1.4%. More detailed data will be released on 3 December.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP rose 1.9% in seasonally-adjusted terms in Q3, which contrasted the 0.9% contraction recorded in Q2. Q3’s rise marked the largest expansion since Q3 2008.

The government expects GDP to expand 3.0% in 2014. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 2.1% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points over the previous month’s projection. For 2015, the panel expects the economy to expand 2.9%, which is also down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s Consensus.
