Romania: Economy accelerates in Q2

August 16, 2017

In the second quarter, the economy expanded 5.9% over the same period of last year, according to a preliminary estimate released on 15 August. The figure marked an acceleration from Q1’s 5.7% expansion and vastly overshot market expectations of a slowdown to 4.8%.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP growth adjusted for seasonal effects slowed to 1.6% in Q2, down from Q1’s reading of 1.8%. The Statistical Office (INSSE) will release more detailed data on 5 September.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 4.6% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2018, the panel expects the economy to expand 3.7%.
