Romania: Economy accelerates at fastest pace in nearly eight years in Q2

In the second quarter, the economy expanded 6.0% over the same period of last year, according to preliminary data released on 12 August. The figure marked a sharp acceleration over Q1’s 4.3% expansion and beat market expectations of a softer 4.1% increase. This is the highest growth rate that has been recorded since Q3 2008.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP growth in Q2 was in line with Q1’s reading of 1.5% in seasonally-adjusted terms. The Statistical Office (INSSE) will release more detailed data on 6 September.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 4.2% in 2016, which is unchanged over the previous month’s projection. For 2017, the panel expects the economy to expand 3.5%.
