Romania: Economic activity decelerates in the final quarter of 2014

February 13, 2015

According to a preliminary estimate released by the statistical office on 13 February, the economy grew 2.6% in Q4 over the same quarter of the previous year. The figure marked a slowdown compared to the 3.3% expansion tallied in Q3, although it did overshoot market expectations of a 2.0% increase. In the full year 2014, the economy expanded 2.5%, which was down from the 3.5% increase recorded in 2013. More detailed data will be released on 6 March.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP rose 0.5% in seasonally-adjusted terms in Q4, which was notably below the 1.8% increase posted in Q3.

The government expects GDP to expand 2.5% in 2015. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 2.8% in 2015, which is unchanged over the previous month’s projection. For 2016, the panel foresees GDP expanding 3.1%.
