Portugal: Economic climate and consumer confidence improve further in July

The consumer confidence index increased from minus 25.9 points in June to minus 24.0 points in July. According to the statistical institute, the improvement in consumer confidence was seen across-the-board with consumers’ expectations of future unemployment falling to the lowest level since 2001.

The economic climate indicator also improved in July, increasing from 0.3 points in June to 0.5 points in July, which is the highest level that has been recorded since July 2008. The indicator has followed an uninterrupted path of improvement since early 2013 and is in optimistic territory for the third consecutive month.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.9% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. For 2015, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.1%. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to increase 3.3% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. For 2015, the panel sees fixed investment expanding 3.1%.
