Portugal: Economic climate and consumer confidence continue to improve in May

The consumer confidence index increased from minus 30.9 points in April to minus 26.1 points in May, which marked the highest level since October 2009. According to the statistical institute, the improvement in consumer confidence was mainly driven by a more optimistic assessment of the country’s economic situation and households’ views on their personal financial situations, which continued on the improvement tallied in April.

The economic climate indicator also improved in May, increasing from minus 0.2 points in April to plus 0.1 points. As a result, the indicator, which now sits at the highest level since September 2010, has entered optimistic territory.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.0% in 2014, which is up 0.2 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2015, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.2%. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to increase 3.4% in 2014, which is up 0.9 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2015, the panel sees fixed investment expanding 2.9%.
