Portugal: Consumer confidence improves, while economic climate indicator falls

November 30, 2014

The consumer confidence index increased from minus 22.2 points in October to minus 21.4 points in November, which marked the highest reading since April 2002. According to the statistical institute, the improvement in consumer confidence was driven mainly by an improvement in consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s economic situation.

The economic climate indicator fell to 0.5 in November, from October’s 0.7 figure. The result marked the lowest reading in five months. Despite the decrease, the indicator remains in optimistic territory.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.2% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.0%. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 2.8% in 2015, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 3.2% in 2016.
