Portugal: Consumer confidence improves slightly while economic climate remains stable in August

The consumer confidence index inched up from minus 18.5 points in July to minus 17.3 points in August, marking the highest value since April 2002. According to the Statistical Institute, the increase in consumer confidence reflected improvements in households’ unemployment perspectives and households’ view on the country’s economic situation.

The economic climate indicator remained in optimistic territory, stabilizing at July’s 1.4 in August, which marked the highest print since May 2008.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.4% in 2015, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.4%. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 2.4% in 2015, which is down 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 2.9% in 2016.
