Portugal: Consumer confidence improves, economic climate unchanged in October

October 30, 2014

The consumer confidence index increased from minus 23.2 points in September to minus 22.2 points in October, which marked the highest reading since April 2002. According to the statistical institute, the improvement in consumer confidence was driven by consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s economic situation and their perspectives on savings over the next year.

The economic climate indicator remained unchanged in October at September and August’s 0.7 figure, which had marked the highest level since July 2008. Consequently, the indicator remains in optimistic territory.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.2% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. For 2015, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.0%. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 2.8% in 2014, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 3.2% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast.
