Portugal: Consumer confidence falls while economic climate inches up in February

February 28, 2016

The consumer confidence index fell from minus 8.8 points in January to minus 13.3 points in February, marking a three-month low. According to the Statistical Institute, the decrease in consumer confidence reflected deteriorations in all components of the index, with households’ view of the future general economic situation recording the most significant downturn.

The economic climate indicator inched up from January’s 0.6 points to a three-month high of 0.7 points in February, thus rising further in optimistic territory.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 2.4% in 2016, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2017, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.8%. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 4.5% in 2016, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 3.1% in 2017.
