Portugal: Consumer confidence and economic climate indicator worsen

January 5, 2015

The consumer confidence index fell from minus 21.4 points in November to minus 23.5 points in December, which marked the lowest reading in four months. According to the Statistical Institute, the deterioration in consumer confidence was driven mainly by a worsening in consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s economic situation and their personal savings over the next year.

The economic climate indicator fell to 0.3 in December, from November’s 0.5 figure. The result marked the lowest reading in seven months. Despite the decrease, the indicator still remains in optimistic territory.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.4% in 2015, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.4%. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 2.4% in 2015, which is down 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 2.9% in 2016.
