Portugal: Consumer confidence and economic climate indicator improve

January 29, 2015

The consumer confidence index rose from minus 23.5 points in December to minus 20.8 points in January, which marked the highest reading since April 2002. According to the Statistical Institute, the rise in consumer confidence was driven by an improvement in consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s economic situation, the household’s financial situation and their personal savings over the next year.

The economic climate indicator rose to 0.3 in January, from December’s 0.2 figure. As a result, the indicator rests in optimistic territory.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.4% in 2015, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.4%. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 2.4% in 2015, which is down 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 2.9% in 2016.
