Portugal: Consumer confidence and economic climate deteriorate in October

The consumer confidence index fell from minus 15.7 points in September to minus 19.1 points in October, marking the lowest value since May. According to the Statistical Institute, the decrease in consumer confidence reflected deteriorations in unemployment perspectives as well as households’ perspectives on the country’s economic situation.

The economic climate indicator remained in optimistic territory, although deteriorating from September’s 1.4 points to 1.2 points in October, which marked a five-month low.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 2.4% in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.8%, which is also up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 4.5% in 2015, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel sees fixed investment expanding 3.1% in 2016, which is also up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s forecast.
