Poland: Growth in retail sales jumps to multi-year high in January

In January, retail sales in Poland rose 11.4% over the same month of 2016, which was well above December’s 6.4% increase. The reading marked the strongest growth in nearly seven years. The improvement was broad-based across nearly all sub-indices, with the fastest growth recorded in fuel and vehicle sales, as well as sales of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and orthopedic equipment.

The trend improved in January; annual average growth in retail sales jumped from December’s 3.7% to 4.6% and was the highest reading in four years.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption growing 3.5% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, the panel sees private consumption expanding 3.0%.
