Peru: Economic activity accelerates in April

June 15, 2015

In April, economic activity expanded 4.3% over the same month last year, which was much stronger than the 2.7% increase tallied in March and marked the fastest expansion since March of last year. According to the Statistical Institute, the expansion was mainly driven by growth in the mining, fishing and manufacturing sectors.

Given the significant acceleration in economic activity, the growth trend increased for the first time in over a year. Annual average growth in economic activity increased from 1.6% in March to 1.7% in April. March’s result had marked the lowest point in over five years.

The Central Bank sees the economy expanding 4.8% in 2015 and 6.0% in 2016. LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect GDP to expand 3.6% in 2015, which is down 0.5 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2016, the panel expects the economy to grow 4.6%.
