Peru: Business confidence inches down in May

June 13, 2014

Business confidence reached 53 points in May according to the Central Bank’s business confidence indicator. The result was just a tick below the 54 points registered in April. Business confidence has been in optimistic territory (above the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism) since July 2011, except for a brief dip it took into negative territory in August 2013.

Businesses’ perceptions across most areas of the index changed only slightly. However, businesses’ views regarding sales and purchase orders with respect to the previous month were notably more pessimistic compared to the previous month. A decrease in businesses’ outlook in terms of hiring personnel in the next three months also contributed to the overall decrease in confidence.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to grow 6.9% this year, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panel participants see investment growing 7.6%.
