Panama: Economic activity accelerates in January
March 24, 2011
In January, the economy expanded 6.6% over the same month last year, according to the monthly indicator of economic activity (IMAE, indice Mensual de Actividad Economica). The reading represented an improvement compared to the 5.0% increase registered in December. A month-on-month comparison corroborates the robust expansion suggested by the annual data, as economic activity increased 0.73% over the previous month in seasonally adjusted terms, virtually unchanged from the 0.72% rise recorded in December. As a result of the monthly improvement, the trend continues to point upwards, with annual average growth in economic activity increasing from 6.3% in December to 6.5% in January, which represents the fastest pace since April 2009.
