Netherlands: Business confidence rises to over-four-year-high in May

May 26, 2015

The producer confidence indicator, which measures Dutch manufacturers’ sentiment, rose from 3.3 points in April to 4.1 points in May, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Businesses had not been this confident since April 2011. As a result, the index moved further above the 0-point threshold that separates optimistic from pessimistic sentiment.

According to the CBS, May’s improvement resulted from the fact that manufacturers were much more positive about their order books. In addition, producers also assessed their future output a bit more positively. Conversely, they were less optimistic about their stocks of finished products than in the previous month.

For 2015, FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see fixed investment growing 4.2%, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel expects fixed investment to expand 2.9%.
