Mexico: Inflation moderates for third month in a row

May 10, 2012

In April, consumer prices dropped 0.31% over the previous month, which contrasted the 0.06% increase recorded in March but was broadly in line with market expectations of a 0.34% decline. The negative reading mainly reflects seasonal effects, namely the beginning of the summer electricity subsidies, which prompted non-core consumer prices to drop 1.84%. Owing to the subdued monthly reading, annual headline inflation dropped for third month in a row, falling from 3.7% in March to 3.4% in April. The figure marks the lowest inflation rate since October 2011, thus gradually falling closer to the Central Bank
