Mexico: Manufacturing sentiment edges down in April

May 4, 2012

In April, the manufacturing index elaborated by the Mexican Institute of Financial Executives (IMEF, Instituto Mexicano de Ejecutivos de Finanzas) edged down to 52.5 points from 52.8 points in March. The figure undershot market expectations, which had the index rising to 53.1 points. At the current level, the index sits 0.8 points below the value reached in the same month last year, which represents a modest improvement over the 1.4 points decline recorded in March. Moreover, the index remains above the 50-point threshold that indicates that the manufacturing sector is expanding. Three out of the five sub-indices that compose the index declined compared to April last year, in particular employment and supplier deliveries. That said, according to the IMEF, the overall result suggests that manufacturing exports continue to expand and that economic activity maintains dynamism
