Mexico: Manufacturing sector remains strong
February 1, 2012
In January, the manufacturing index elaborated by the Mexican Institute of Financial Executives (IMEF, Instituto Mexicano de Ejecutivos de Finanzas) remained unchanged at December's 51.8 points. The figure was 0.9 points above the level observed in the same month the previous year and exceeded the 50-point threshold that indicates that the manufacturing sector is expanding. The improvement was broad-based, with four out of the five sub-indices composing the index rising over their previous year's value. In particular, the new orders sub-index rose 0.7 points to 52.7 points, whereas the current production index was unchanged from last year at 54.2 points. IMEF anticipates manufacturing activity in Mexico will continue to expand in the months ahead, supported by the pick-up in manufacturing activity witnessed in recent months in the United States.
