Malaysia: Export growth soars in May

Exports in USD terms grew a robust 23.2% annually in May, which followed April’s 6.6% increase. May’s increase came on the back of soaring shipments of manufactured goods. Import growth rose from 10.4% in April to 21.4% in May.

The trade balance came in at a USD 1.3 billion surplus in May, above the USD 0.8 billion surplus recorded in the same month last year. The 12-month moving sum of the trade surplus increased to USD 19.6 billion in May, above April’s USD 19.2 billion.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect exports to grow 6.5% in USD terms in 2017 and 6.0% in 2018.
