Malaysia: Inflation ticks up in May
June 19, 2013
In May, consumer prices rose 0.28% over the previous month, which was above the 0.09% increase tallied in April and mainly reflected higher prices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels as well as for food and non-alcoholic beverages.
As a result of the monthly price rise, inflation inched up from 1.7% in April to 1.8% in May, which was above market expectations of 1.7%. Annual average inflation, however, remained unchanged at 1.5% for a third month in a row.
FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panellists expect inflation to accelerate in the months ahead and average 2.3% in 2013, which is unchanged from last month's projection. For 2014, the panel sees inflation rising further to 2.7%.
