Malaysia: Inflation moderates in August

Consumer prices were unchanged in August over the previous month. The reading came in below the 0.8% in recorded July. Two of the 12 major components of the index saw decreases, with the most substantial decrease found in the transport group. Food and non-alcoholic beverage was the component that recorded the biggest increase.

Inflation moderated from 3.3% in July to 3.1% in August, marking a four-month low. The tally marginally overshot market expectations by 0.1 percentage points. Despite August’s decrease, annual average inflation held stable at 2.2% for the fourth consecutive month.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 2.3% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2016, the panel sees inflation rising to 2.9%, which is also unchanged from last month’s forecast.
