Malaysia: Inflation eases in July

August 23, 2017

According to the Statistical Institute, consumer prices fell 0.1% in July over the previous month, the highest reading since March. The monthly decrease reflected lower prices for transport and clothing and footwear.

Inflation came in at 3.2% in July, which was below June’s 3.6% and marked a six-month low. The reading was slightly below market expectations of 3.3%. Despite the fall, annual average inflation edged up to 3.0% in July from 2.8% in June.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 3.6% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2018, the panel sees inflation at 2.6%.
