Malaysia: Inflation doubles in April

May 22, 2015

Consumer prices remained stable in April at March’s 0.9%. All components of the index increased over the previous month, although April’s result was mainly driven by higher prices for communications, miscellaneous goods and services, and alcohol and tobacco.

Annual inflation jumped from March’s 0.9% to 1.8% in April, marking a four-month high. The tally undershot market expectations of a 2.1% increase. Despite April’s increase, annual average inflation ticked down from March’s 2.4% to 2.3% in April.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 2.6% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2016, the panel sees inflation rising to 3.1%.
