Malaysia: Inflation accelerates in August

In August, consumer prices rose 0.43% over the previous month, which was slightly up from the 0.26% increase registered in July, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia. Of the twelve main categories that comprise the index, nine increased and three declined.

Inflation accelerated and jumped from 1.1% in July to 1.5% in August, which also came in above market expectations of a 1.3% rise. Annual average inflation in August was 2.4%, just under July’s 2.5%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 2.3% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2017, the panel sees inflation rising to 2.6%.
