Malaysia: Industrial production decelerates in December
February 10, 2011
In December, industrial output increased 4.2% over the same month the previous year. The print came in below November's 5.4% expansion (previously reported: +5.1% year-on-year) and undershot market expectations, which had industrial production rising 5.0%. The deceleration was the result of a dismal performance in the mining and electricity sectors, which was partly offset by stronger performance in the manufacturing sector. While mining contracted 3.4% over December 2009 (November: +1.7% yoy), electricity production slowed to 2.4% (November: +4.9% yoy). In contrast, the manufacturing sector, which accounts for nearly two thirds of total industrial output, picked up to expand 7.8% (November: +7.0% yoy).
