Malaysia: Industrial activity contracts at sharpest pace on record in April

Industrial output dropped 32.0% in year-on-year terms in April, which was a larger contraction than March’s 4.9% decrease. April’s result marked the worst reading on record.

The decline came on the back of contractions in manufacturing, and electricity and gas generation output.

On a monthly basis, industrial output decreased 27.5% in April, which was well below March’s 8.9% fall. The print marked the worst result on record. Meanwhile, the trend pointed down, with the annual average variation of industrial production coming in at minus 1.2% in April, down from March’s plus 1.7% reading.
