Malaysia: Industrial production remains strong despite deceleration in September

November 11, 2014

Industrial production increased a strong 5.4% in September over the same month last year. The figure was down from the 6.5% increase observed in August and slightly below market expectations of a 5.5% rise. The deceleration was driven by slower growth in both the manufacturing and electricity sectors.

On a monthly basis, industrial production decreased a seasonally-adjusted 0.2% in September, which contrasted the 3.5% increase that was observed in August. However, annual average growth in industrial production increased from 4.2% in August to 4.4% in September.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 4.9% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. In 2015, the panel expects industrial output to expand 4.5%, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast.
