Malaysia: Industrial production growth picks up in July

Industrial production grew 6.1% in July from the same month last year, above June’s 4.0% increase. The figure beat market expectations of a softer 5.3% increase. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, July’s acceleration was mainly the result of stronger growth in the manufacturing and electricity sectors.

On a monthly basis, industrial production increased a seasonally-adjusted 1.4% in July, below June’s 1.9% rise. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production edged up to 4.6% from June’s 4.4%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 4.3% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. In 2018, the panel expects industrial output to expand 4.0%.
