Malaysia: Industrial production accelerates in July

September 10, 2015

Industrial production increased 6.1% in July over the same month last year, which came in well above the 4.4% increase tallied in June. July’s reading was driven by strong gains in the mining sector, while manufacturing observed a more modest expansion. On the other hand, the electricity sector contracted for the second month in a row, albeit at a more moderate pace than in June.

On a monthly basis, industrial production fell 0.1%, marking a deterioration from June’s flat reading. Despite July’s contraction, annual average growth in industrial production climbed from 5.2% in June to 5.6% in July, the highest figure since August 2006.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.9% in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. In 2016, the panel expects industrial output to expand 4.4%.
