Malaysia: Industrial production accelerates in August

October 10, 2014

Industrial production increased 6.5% in August over the same month last year. The figure was a steep jump up from the 0.5% increase observed in July and overshot market expectations of a 5.1% rise. The acceleration was driven by notably faster growth in both the manufacturing and electricity sectors as well as a rebound in mining.

On a monthly basis, industrial production increased a seasonally-adjusted 3.4% in August, which contrasted the 3.7% decrease that was observed in July. Annual average growth in industrial production increased from 3.9% in July to 4.2% in August.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 4.7% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. In 2015, the panel expects industrial output to expand 4.3%.
